History of Lakewood
In the year 1889, Charles Welch and W.A.H. Loveland mapped out a thirteen block area in Eastern Jefferson Country, along the Colfax Avenue for a suburban community that is now known as Lakewood. Until the year of 1969, Lakewood had no municipal government and was solely relying on water districts, fire districts and the Jefferson County government. Incorporated in the year 1969, Lakewood was earlier known as Jefferson City but was later changed due an overpowering dislike of the name. At this time, the city already had a population of more than 90,000 people.
